When I first started going out many years ago, there used to be queues to get into the club before the doors opened.
Can u believe it, people in a venue for when it opened !? Unfortunately, with the advent of late night bars, clubs are filling up later and later today, meaning the whole flow of a classic night out is lost.
Remember walking into the club, standing at the bar looking out over an empty dance floor.. listening to the DJ play some real down tempo music while everyone found their favourite corner ? As the club filled and the crowd started to get hyper, the music would peak before the final DJ played one or two tracks to wind it down and send you on your way.
This may sound alien to many clubbers today, but for me this was a perfect night out. This format also shaped a lot of ‘sessions’ myself and the lads had at my house in the early 90’s.. listening to rave tapes and DJ sets from Paul Moran & Steve Warner, amongst many others. Bodies scattered all across the floor, a multitude of conversations taking place but everyone united by the music in the background.
These early experiences were to shape my DJ style, and in the latest edition of The Vocal Booth Club Sessions I feel that I have captured the essence of such a night perfectly. Some episodes feel like a bunch of records mixed together, others feel like a story has been told.. for Episode 46, for me, it is a classic club night condensed into 2 hours.
